THE ART OF JAPANESE SWORD POLISHING
TAKAIWA Setsuo, et al (2006)
While this book illustrates the methods, materials and
tools used for art sword polishing its true aim is to enable the reader
to appreciate the beauty of a well-crafted Japanese sword. As readers
learn both how the togishi - sword polisher enhances the beauty
of the blade and how he handles the problems of coaxing out its finest
qualities through his polishing techniques, they will come to a deeper
understanding of the fine art of making the Japanese sword and will be
able to view, purchase or collect swords with greater pleasure.
Also included are profiles of five top togishi, including
Ningen Kokuho - FUJISHIRO Matsuo.

PIERRES ET SABRES:
STONES AND SWORDS - The Restoration of Japanese Art Sword Blades
Laurent Milhau (1999)
With full text in both French and English, Milhau demonstrates the art and
complexity of sword polishing. For those fascinated by
The Crafts of the Japanese Sword, this text
furthers the examination of the togishi - sword polisher's - art. With
color photographs and detailed descriptions of each stage of the polishing process, this is
the first text of its kind for delivering an understanding of both the mechanics and theory
of traditional art sword polishing.
96 pages, 8¾ x 11¼" hardcover $110.00 |

While the publisher's assertion that
TAKAIWA's book is "the first book in English to examine in great detail
the polisher's techniques" is incorrect, it does offer a contrasting
perspective. Milhau's book offers a strictly traditional take on
polishing while this new publication includes account of nontraditional
techniques utilized by some in Japan, and biographies of prominent
Japanese polishers.
Can having two books on polishing inform you better than having only one? Yes.
