We carry both maintenance items, and oshigata kits. The photo at right shows the
typical tools-of-study at work. The two swords have been dismantled and cleaned.
Oshigata, or rubbings, of the tangs were then made. While in the
background Hawley's Japanese Swordsmiths
and an appropriate reference book of oshigata are consulted.

The oshigata
records characteristics important to the study of the Japanese sword: nakago
proportions and style, file marks, location and shape of mekugi-ana, and mei.
These kits include all the components needed to make traditional oshigata: 30
pieces of 1¾ x 9½" washi (Japanese paper), 1 sekkaboku (ink stone), 2

THREE PART BRASS HAMMER
Available separately. Primarily used to loosen the mekugi when dismantling a
sword. The removable pin also serves as a tap to loosen stubborn mekugi.
